We don't have to forget that this is a shoddy country. Shoddy, shabby, cheap, you name it. That was the sentence that was headlined in the interior pages of a newspaper the other day. It was excerpted from an interview with Eduardo Mendoza, a Spanish writer. I didn't read the interview but the headline stuck. I've been using it since, occasionally, for it actually can be applied to explain most stories in the local news.
Shoddy is a gentle way to describe it. Flat, stupid, lazy, sanctimonious, mediocre, and coward would suit it better. With only one bright moment in history, that of the transition from dictatorship to democracy, utterly wasted by now to the vices cited above and to the further and ultimate one of the poorly democratic, lifeless bureaucratic nothing called Europe.

I'm recommending my son he starts seriously considering leaving this country for good as soon as he can. Me too.
