I think it was in McEwan's Atonement where I read it. Briony, the catalyzer of the plot, a character tormented for life, states at some point that the interesting stories are those which never get written down. What's actually printed for all to read is by and large less appealing.
[Just yesterday I watched the film adaptation on TV which reminded me of that little entry. Quite a fairly decent movie as well, in my opinion.]
