The last day of the year represents, of course, nothing to write home about. Its a mere formality encoded in the way we happen to arrange the passing of days - a schedule of our time schedule. There has to be a beginning and an end to each year. Arrange it differently and Dec. 31st will lose all of its symbolic meaning. That's exactly the same reason why running a full marathon has nothing to do with running two half-marathons in a row. That is not how the mind works.
