Departures (Okuribito) is a 2008 Japanese movie by Yojiro Takita which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009. Apparently this award came as a surprise to its director, even though it had already won all major domestic awards in Japan. I saw it last week and was moved to tears all through the film. I just couldn't help it - being on my own I wept silent tears of sadness, but also of joy. It is, truly and wholly, a wonderful movie.
