It occurred to him ...

It occurred to him that the only way to live a decent life - meaning by that free of unnecessary stress - was to get rid of his ego, as much as it were possible to shield one's sense of personal identity from external disturbances - the genetic burden of our zeal for competition. By becoming an ego free man he would reach genuine happiness. Yet that was easier said than done.
